When I announced I was going on vacation earlier this month, I didn't expect I'd get myself a new computer project out of it, but here we are. When I was on the road during my vacation, one of my friends spotted an old Compaq Presario PC abandoned on the curb, and because I couldn't help it, I brought it home.
The computer had likely sat outside in the rain/snow for a while before I rescued it, and thus, it was absolutely disgusting. To prevent my friend's truck from getting crud all over it, we put it in a trash bag for the trip back home.
Because of how dirty it was, the first step was to take it completely apart & clean it one part at a time. I was quite impressed by how easy it was to work on; the best part is that all the drives were in tool less bays.
The cleaning process also gave me the first look at the specs of it, which are about what you'd expect from a 2003-ish prebuilt PC.
Unfortunately, this specific model of Compaq has basically no online documentation about it.
The photo didn't capture it very well, but the poor hard drive was covered in an incredible amount of dust. Considering how long this machine sat outside, and the fact that 20 year old HDDs aren't that reliable anyways, I wouldn't be surprised if this drive is dead.
Once I got most of the parts out, I started cleaning them one by one, starting with the CD/DVD drives. I'll likely take the motherboard & PSU out eventually, but that's a far more difficult process, so I'm just focusing on the smaller parts for now.
Sometime in February, I'll upload another page once I get this thing running again. It'll be a slow process, but hopefully I can restore it back to perfect condition & get it running Windows XP again.
