MSI MS-7142 - Back to Home

Sometime in late 2018 or 2019, I got an old PC from the dumpster with this MSI Socket 754 motherboard in it. The PC was in pretty bad condition; it had no HDD, no optical or floppy drives, no motherboard I/O shield, and the generic beige case it had was badly yellowed & still smelled like the dumpster. I threw that junky case in the trash, but I kept the rest of the machine, including the motherboard. For the first time since I got it, I threw some parts back on it & booted it up.

The MSI motherboard setup.

The CPU is an AMD Sempron 3100+, the RAM is some no name DDR stick I found in a bag of random RAM, and the power supply is the same 300W ACBel that I used with the Inspiron 530 motherboard. Luckily I still had the CPU cooler, unlike the Inspiron motherboard which I had to run with no cooler.

The MSI board booted.

The board seems to work just fine, which is a bit surprising since it's a dumpster find. I did get some weird graphical glitches one time I booted it, but I reseated the RAM and it never happened again. Most likely, the no name RAM stick I used is just junk.

The OS/2 BIOS options on this board.

This motherboard's BIOS has an option for booting in to IBM OS/2, which I found quite interesting. Other than that, it's a fairly standard motherboard with not much interesting to look at.

Maybe I'll do more with this board at some point, but for now, it'll be going back to the depths of my basement file cabinet.
