Recently, I was lucky enough to get permission to look around an electronics facility at some of the PCs being recycled. It was quite incredible to see the assortment of old hardware, most of which is unfortunately doomed to the scrap shredder. But, at least I was there to document it before destruction. The photos are terrible due to being in a dark warehouse, sorry about that.
This is one side of the pallet that was set aside for roughly Pentium III and before systems. I thought about trying to list out the model of every single computer, but that would be futile. A lot of them are in pretty rough shape, but still: there's an IBM 5150, a very nice Pentium II Compaq, and a decent Dell Dimension. Also, off the pallet on the right side is a PowerMac G4.
On the other side is a 386, a strange bright orange Compaq Presario, and many others. The beige case at the very bottom of the pallet is some type of fancy old gaming PC, but without being able to open up the case, I don't know much else.
The only machine I have a close-up image of is this trashed Socket 7 PC with no CPU. The front panel is not supposed to fold down like that; it looks like it got ran over by a truck. I would be curious to know if the motherboard still worked, but I guess we'll never know.
Without being able to break down each computer, there isn't much to write about, but it was still too cool not to share. The good news is that this may not be the end for pages about the electronics recycler.
